Tape Storage for Mac Users

Posted on December 10th, 2013

imacWe are seeing more and more Mac users looking into the different options available today for their data storage solutions. LTO tape is a serious contender with its reliability, versatility and cost effectiveness. With many users in high end data consumption (in excess of 1TB daily/weekly), speed and ease of storage also come into play.

Bundles are now available so that users can buy all that is needed without shopping around for additional parts. So, what is needed? Actually, what is in the bundle..!

First is the Drive. Decide your needs (LTO tape generation chart) and go with that technology. The latest is the LTO6 drive whose media tapes can hold 2.5TB of uncompressed data (Consider using LTO 5 tapes while prices are high for LTO6 tapes, these will reduce in time). The drive usually come with a SAS interface (Fibre Channel is available).

Atto cards/adapters are then linked to connect to your Mac system via the USB or Thunderbolt (SAS, Fibre and/or Thunderbolt cables will be required).

The Mac will require software to enable you to transfer and read data for which we recommend the Tolis Bru software. The PE edition is an extremely easy, creative, drag and drop method.
